How Our Dog’s Diet Can Affect Their Behavior

As devoted dog owners, we all strive to provide the best care for our furry companions, and a fundamental aspect of their well-being is their diet. But did you know that what your dog eats can significantly impact their behavior? In this blog post, we’ll explore the intricate relationship between diet and behavior in dogs and share our personal journey in discovering the optimal diet for our beloved canine, Trunks.

Understanding the Impact of Diet on Behavior: Just like humans, dogs can be affected by the foods they consume. Different types of proteins, fruits, and vegetables can have varying effects on their overall health and behavior. Some proteins are considered “cooling,” while others are “heating,” and finding the right balance is crucial for maintaining a harmonious temperament in your dog.

Cooling Proteins:

  1. Fish: Fish, such as salmon or mackerel, are considered cooling proteins. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory properties and can help soothe skin irritations and allergies in dogs.

  2. Rabbit: Rabbit meat is another cooling protein option for dogs. It’s lean and easily digestible, making it suitable for dogs with sensitive stomachs or allergies.

  3. Turkey: Turkey is a cooling protein source that provides essential amino acids and is low in fat. It can be a good option for dogs with digestive issues or those prone to weight gain.

Heating Proteins:

  1. Lamb: Lamb is considered a heating protein, meaning it has warming properties that can increase body heat. It’s rich in protein and essential nutrients but may not be suitable for dogs with sensitive stomachs or allergies.

  2. Beef: Beef is another heating protein that provides a concentrated source of energy. While it’s nutritious and flavorful, it may be too rich for some dogs, leading to digestive upset or food sensitivities.

  3. Chicken: Chicken is a common heating protein in many dog diets. While it’s a good source of lean protein, some dogs may be sensitive to chicken, especially if they have allergies or inflammatory conditions.

  • It’s essential to note that the cooling and heating properties of proteins are just one factor to consider when choosing the right diet for your dog. Individual preferences, dietary sensitivities, and overall health should also be taken into account. Consulting with a veterinarian or canine nutritionist can help you determine the best protein sources and diet plan for your furry friend.

Exploring Different Diet Options: There is a myriad of diet options available for dogs, ranging from NRC raw diets to kibble like Farmina. Our personal favorite is Big Country Raw, renowned for its quality and nutritional value. Experimenting with different proteins allowed us to identify the ones that suited Trunks best, laying the foundation for his dietary journey.

Transitioning to a Raw Diet: After experiencing complications with a commercial kibble brand, we transitioned Trunks to a half kibble and half raw diet, gradually shifting towards a pure raw food regimen. Our current diet consists of Pure Duck Big Country Raw, supplemented with Quail eggs, duck feet, duck necks, and beneficial additions like turmeric and coconut oil from Green JuJu.

Collaborating with Professionals: Navigating Trunks’ dietary needs, particularly due to his anxiety issues, required expert guidance. We consulted with a herbal vet, Dr. Elock at Bridgeland Vet Clinic, who provided invaluable insights tailored to Trunks’ specific requirements. By incorporating herbal remedies and dietary adjustments, we witnessed remarkable improvements in Trunks’ overall health and demeanor.

The Remarkable Results: The transformation in Trunks’ well-being was nothing short of extraordinary. From enhanced bowel movements and increased energy levels to improved coat condition and clearer eyes and ears, the positive impact of his tailored diet was evident in every aspect of his life.

Conclusion: As dog owners, it is our responsibility to educate ourselves on the importance of nutrition and its profound effect on our pets’ behavior and well-being. By embarking on a journey of exploration, consulting with professionals, and making informed dietary choices, we can unlock the key to a happier, healthier life for our beloved canine companions. Remember, investing in your dog’s diet is an investment in their long-term health and happiness.
